Sustainable Air Fuel (SAF): a game changer for air freight
Aircrafts are essential for transporting freight, but with flights travelling globally 24/7, this is bound to have a significant environmental impact in the long run. Sustainable Air Fuel (SAF) presents a cleaner alternative to conventional jet fuel, with similar characteristics but considerably lower emissions. It can be produced from waste oil and fats, green and municipal waste, and non-food crops.
SAF is also known as a drop-in fuel as it can be implemented in current engines and does not require aircrafts to have any modifications. It’s estimated that SAF could contribute to around 65% of the reduction in emissions needed by aviation to reach net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. With this data in mind, it’s clear that SAF is a strong competitor for fossil fuels, making a start for more sustainable freight transportation.
Biofuels in road freight: paving the way for greener logistics
Road and truck transportation accounts for a substantial portion of logistics operations, and the fuel used can greatly influence climate change outcomes. The global share of biofuels in transport fuel consumption is expected to climb from 4.3% to 5.4% during 2022-2027, signalling a remarkable shift towards more sustainable logistics .
Two types of fuels are emerging as key players in this transition – biodiesel and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). Biodiesel is a biodegradable, renewable and non-toxic fuel made from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled cooking oils and greases. Its appeal lies in its ability to reduce greenhouse gases, and as a drop-in replacement for diesel without requiring engine modifications.
Similarly, HVO is produced through the hydrotreatment, which is oil refining using hydrogen, of waste vegetable oils and fats. It can be used as drop-in alternative fuel, offering a renewable hydrocarbon that significantly reduces CO2 emissions. With a shelf life of up to 10 years, HVO is a reliable and sustainable alternative for long-haul road transportation within the logistics industry.
Electric vehicles: the future of Final Mile deliveries
Final-mile deliveries are crucial in logistics, especially in urban areas, often contributing to increased air pollution. Electric Vehicles (EVs) offer a solution by reducing the environmental impact of these essential deliveries. While the initial cost of EVs may be higher, their long-term benefits are substantial.
EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution. They are also more energy efficient than internal combustion engines, converting over 77% of the electrical energy from the grid to driving power, which in turn lowers fuel and maintenance costs. Air pollution is therefore consequently reduced in urban areas whilst goods are still delivered safely and efficiently.
